Tourism boom for Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples
In 2017, Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples welcomed a record number of visitors, with ticket sales reaching 870,000.
Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples is one of Sicily’s top tourist attractions. This UNESCO-protected site is an important archaeological park and boasts great temples that date back to ancient Greece. There is also an archaeological museum there (the Archaeological Museum of San Nicola), which boasts a collection of Attic pottery, ex-votoes, figurines, statues and the giant Telamon from the Temple of Zeus.
Increased Tourism at Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples
Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples certainly experienced a tourism boom in 2017, with the site recording the highest number of visitors in its history and exceeding the numbers of visitors to other popular Italy attractions.
For 2017, the total number of visitors to the Valley of the Temples was 870,000: a number that seems destined to increase in the course of 2018. With so many visitors, Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples now finds itself as one of Italy’s top 10 most visited attractions. In fact, visitor numbers to this Sicily archaeological site exceeded the Egyptian Museum of Turin, the Royal Palace of Caserta and the archaeological areas of Paestum and Herculaneum!
The Cultural Ministry for Sicily suggested that this boom in tourism may be due to the popular evening tours that became available in 2017, as well as investment by CoopCulture to improve facilities, including a new multilingual reception and online tickets.
